  14. <p>    DIED. Andreas Hillgruber, 64, West German historian whose
  15. controversial interpretation of the Nazi mass murder of Jews
  16. touched off a heated debate about the meaning of the Holocaust;
  17. of throat cancer; on May 8 in Cologne. In his 1986 book Two
  18. Kinds of Destruction: The Shattering of the German Reich and the
  19. End of European Jewry, Hillgruber argued that the Nazi
  20. extermination program, while atrocious, was not historically
  21. unique. Hillgruber also justified the last stand of Hitler's
  22. army against the approaching Soviets, claiming that it allowed
  23. civilians to escape the "revenge organs of the Red Army."
